Environmental Policy
In line with the policy of our parent group, we at JDT operate a "green conscience" policy in our sourcing and own on-site activities.
Wherever possible all packaging materials are recycled, including polythene, paper and metal bindings. Also, a range of the latest environmentally-sensitive timber treatment is available through our three timber treatment plants.
Most significantly JDT sources raw material only from quality suppliers who either conform to FSC or PEFC certification, or independent environmental certification.
As part of our environmental philosophy we are fully paid up members of Forests Forever and are certified for FSC “Chain Of Custody”, a voluntary timber industry initiative working to safeguard the world's forests - and Britain's future timber supplies.
Forests Forever encourages forest owners to improve management practices, ensures Members source timber responsibly, and promotes the environmental benefits of wood as our only naturally renewable building material.
AN ENVIRONMENTAL PURCHASING POLICY FOR WOOD AND WOOD PRODUCTS
Under this policy James Donaldson & Sons Limited will:
- Obtain clearest practicable information about product sources - at least to the country of origin - and seek evidence of good practice and forest management from all suppliers of wood products. Labels or certificates which include messages of environmental soundness or claims of sustainability will not be accepted, or used as evidence of compliance, unless supported by a recognised international standard.
- Give preference to suppliers of all wood products from sources where information is provided on good silviculture, and logging practices operating within the forestry laws of the country concerned.
- Specifically in respect of tropical woods products, give preference to purchases from countries demonstrating commitment and implementation of Target 2000 Criteria and "Guidelines for the Sustainable Management of Natural Tropical Forests" of the International Tropical Timber Organisation.
- Subscribe to the evolution of more efficient use of the commercial tree, and the wood derived from it. In this respect JDT supports concepts of using a wider variety of species when silviculture and ecologically appropriate. We also advocate making greater economic and practical use of raw material, including residues and waste.
- Promote incentives for continuous forest management, work towards systems which trace the sources, and authenticate and certify the flow of wood from sustainably managed forests. We will also give preference to overseas suppliers working within, or towards, such systems.
- Finally, James Donaldson & Sons Limited will review and extend this policy as a result of future recommendations by the Timber Trade Federation and Forests Forever.
